About FYLD
FYLD’s mission is to power productivity, safety, and efficiency in field teams around the world to enable operational excellence. We provide managers with real-time workflow visibility to deliver greater business efficiency, all while eliminating paperwork and unnecessary disruption to field teams’ vital work on the tools. Our digital platform reduces safety hazards, regulatory fines, and productivity losses facing an industrial field workforce.
At its core the product has an app for field workers connected to a web-app for their managers. The app allows workers in the field to automatically assess and log hazards using natural language processing, image analysis and predictive reasoning. It also allows them to provide status updates on how work is progressing. This then gives managers real time visibility of their sites, allowing them to focus on the jobs that need their attention most.
Founded in 2020 as a partnership between BCG and SGN, FYLD has expanded rapidly as an innovator in the utilities and construction industries, which are otherwise stuck in early digitisation. FYLD is now used by over 100 organisations across five different continents and grew 300% in 2023.
FYLD raised a £12m Series A round in late 2023, and is backed by blue-chip investors including Ontario Teacher’s Pension Plan (OTPP), Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and SGN. The company is aiming for its Series B in early 2026.
Role & Responsibilities
FYLD is looking for a Lead Backend Engineer reporting to our Director of Engineering. This is a critical role for the business as we continue to enhance our backend systems to support our growing product offerings and long-term roadmap. We need an experienced technical leader who can shape our backend architecture, contribute to the broader product and company strategies, build and mentor a high-performing team, and establish efficient development practices to deliver exceptional results for our customers.
FYLD has strong traction in the market and a healthy sales pipeline based on the productivity gains that can be realised from digitising processes for workers in the field. However, we are just scratching the surface of the value that we can unlock for our customers. By investing further in our AI capabilities we can deliver even more value for customers, for example predicting and preventing delays and site stoppages, by forecasting job durations to enable dynamic scheduling, while also deepening our competitive moat.
Key responsibilities include:
Provide technical leadership to the engineering team, mentoring and guiding them in architectural design and problem-solving techniques.
Define and implement the architectural vision for scalable, secure, and maintainable software products.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions, designing modular and extensible systems.
Lead efforts to optimise software for scalability and performance, identifying and resolving bottlenecks.
Set coding standards, conduct code reviews, and ensure adherence to engineering best practices through hands-on leadership.
Design and develop containerised backend services and scalable APIs using Django, AWS, and Terraform.
Drive the development of technical roadmaps and evaluate cutting-edge tools to ensure alignment with business objectives.
Experience
Key experience:
8+ years of experience in designing and implementing REST APIs with a strong focus on scalability and performance.
Minimum of 5 years of commercial experience with Django and Django REST Framework.
Proven expertise in designing and maintaining cloud-based architectures and implementing best practices in cloud environments.
Strong knowledge of microservices architecture, containerisation, and modern backend engineering practices.
Proficient in decomposing services and implementing Domain-Driven Design (DDD)
Demonstrable experience in scaling platforms, including optimising software for high-availability and performance.
Proficient in AWS cloud services like Fargate, ECS, RDS, Cognito along with expertise in infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform.
Working knowledge of messaging systems like Kafka and adept in implementing Publish-Subscribe and Event Sourcing architectural patterns.
Good working knowledge of Relational, Vector and NoSQL Databases
Additional requirements:
Advanced degree in Computer Science
Excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to lead and mentor a team effectively.
Proactive and results-driven, with a passion for solving real-world problems using technology.
Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, particularly in complex systems and production environments.
Location
This is a full-time, remote role based in the UK, with occasional travel to London for face-to-face meetings.

FYLD is a young, dynamic company that is growing quickly. The people here are entrepreneurial, passionate, and ambitious, as well as high-integrity, low-ego, collaborative, personable, and constructive. The pace is fast, our people feel deep accountability for driving amazing customer experiences.
Inclusivity
At FYLD, we welcome everyone regardless of their background, race, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, protected veteran status, disability, age, etc. We nurture an inclusive work environment and are committed to ensuring equal opportunity in employment for qualified persons with disabilities.
In addition, we have implemented a flexible way of working which we believe enables teams and individuals to do their best work, regardless of where they’re based. While we value in-person collaboration and know a change of scenery and quiet space to work is welcomed from time to time, we also appreciate and understand that the world of work has changed.
All offers of employment are contingent upon an individual’s ability to secure and maintain the legal right to work at the company.
We know that innovation thrives on product teams where diverse points of view come together to solve hard problems in ways that are just now possible.
